At the start of the year SNO!zone Castleford were on the search for someone to take on our 'Learn to ski challenge' Gemma Wilson answered that call...
Skiing is a major part of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never been, I’ve just got a severe case of FOMO (fear of missing out) based on the fact that for the past decade the majority of my friends have enjoyed perpetual ski holidays. I even tragically lost one of my best friends to New Zealand after she fell in love with the mountains and one ski season turned into another ski season and we now hang out on a virtual basis.
I’ve put the effort in. To date I have spent a short but none-the-less painful amount of time on my ass attached to a snowboard on the dry slope while I was at Uni, during which time I maximised all related posing opportunities and nailed the après in Austria during the annual student BUSC holiday. I’ve been known to drop the odd ‘sick’ and ‘rad’ into conversation, mainly just to see what happens and if I can get away with it.
But ultimately, you can’t have a shot of jaeger and a quick fondue and think you’re a master of the Alps. With a growing woolly hat collection and social circles moving towards the snow, it’s time to take matters into my own hands, which is why I find myself booking on to my first proper ski holiday with friends, and why I also need to get up to speed as quickly as possible.
My name is Gemma; I’m 24 years old living in Leeds. I work in PR and I am terrified of skiing. Don’t tell anyone. I’ve tried hypnosis, now I’m going to try lessons, because, well, sorry Derren Brown but that just seems like a better bet.
So it is with the perma-grin of apprehension that I have signed up to the beginners ski lesson programme at SNO!zone Castleford. And I can’t wait. Honest…
